I am not going to pretend that I am expert enough in J2EE and .Net to say which is better. Having talked to people who are experts in these areas (aka Ted Neward) I don’t think anyone is foolish enough to say one is better than another. I do not want to start a new religious crusade. I will say this “Without data you are just another person with an opinion.” Show me the data!
Eweek has released some reports on Open Source vs. .Net stacks. The results are surprising the JBoss on Windows outperformed JBoss on Linux (and everything else)! Also the WAMP (Windows 2003, Apache, My SQL & PHP) came in 3rd. If you do not believe the outcomes of eweek, this is just another point on a long building graph of studies:

After Mr. Gates has announced his imminent retirement, Microsoft announced its Open Document Format Open Source project. This project converts the Microsoft Office 2007 Open XML format to Open Document Format. While Microsoft traditionally is opposed to make its bread-and-butter office product more open, this is a step in the right direction. This is something that Microsoft hasn’t previously done.
Disclaimer: Microsoft and the Open Source team has not mentioned how much of the MS Office 2007 feature set will be supported in the Open Document convertor.

Virtual PC is now free! Virtual Server has been free for a while but that product requires a Server host operation system. Virtual PC is one of my favorite tools!

As I mentioned I love my Bluetooth headset. I can click and hold the headset button and it will beep three times. Then I can play my music and podcasts. If I receive a phone call while listening to music I can click the button and talk. When the call is over, the music will start playing again (unfortunately not on my headset). I just have to push and hold the button again until I hear the three beeps and the music will play in the headset. I have never even touched my phone!
I knew I liked it but I would have never have guessed this is a 1 Billion dollar market!

Boy with a title like that I sure am a geek . I went to the local Sprint store and got a great salesman. He actually encouraged me to try on different headsets and that was very important! The one I was considering did not fit my ear very well. I settled on the Plantronics Voyager™ 510 Bluetooth® Headset.
It works great! I tested it out and I can walk at least 25 feet from the phone. I can set the phone in the middle of the house and it covers the entire house! That is with the 802.11b WiFi, cordless phones and microwaves! But I couldn’t listen to my podcasts / music. This was a deal breaker for me. I was ready to return it. But the mobile bloggers came through for me!
I started researching Windows Mobile 5 Bluetooth profiles. Jason Langridge lists the supported profiles:
Generic Access Profile (GAP)
Generic Object Exchange Profile (GEOP)
Serial Port Profile (SPP)
Dial-up Networking (DUN) Profile
Hands-Free Profile (HFP)
Headset Profile (HSP)

Mobile Data Access Application Block
My Article on Mobile Database Development was published in the August edition of Smartphone & Pocket PC Magazine (http://www.pocketpcmag.com/)! I have been researching which database engine to use for my Windows Mobile 5 development. Go and buy a copy now!!!
In that article I mention that OpenNetCF (http://www.opennetcf.org/PermaLink.aspx?guid=b876e34a-deef-45ce-ace9-f1b35813db79) has ported a version of the Microsoft Patterns & Practices Data Access Application Block (DAAB) (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=F63D1F0A-9877-4A7B-88EC-0426B48DF275&displaylang=en) to the Pocket PC. I then review several databases that work with the .Net CF 2.0 and Windows Mobile 5. Well here is the code!! (http://www.nantz.org/appblocks.zip) This code extends the OpenNetCF DAAB to support as many of the databases I reviewed as I could ( e.g. the ones I could download the ADO.Net providers).

NCS 2.0 Library Update!
I have added Oracle’s Beta ADO.Net 2.0 provider and Postgresql 2.0 provider support to the Microsoft Pattern’s & Practices Enterprise Library 2.0. I have added it to the NCS 2.0 Library so go and download it (http://www.nantz.org/Software/tabid/58/Default.aspx) and play with it!

Microsoft now realizes that the center of the universe has shifted from the computer to the cell phone. The computer will soon become an accessory to the smartphone. I am very interest in what MS is doing with Live Mobile.

My favorite virus company (McAfee) is beta testing a Windows Mobile 5 product! (http://blogs.msdn.com/jasonlan/archive/2006/06/15/632093.aspx) The only virus scanner I will tolerate on my machines is McAfee’s auto-updating product. I would hope the mobile version also auto-updates over my EVDO connection – we will have to see! Also, I would love to see McAfee allow me to pay a yearly fee to protect all my devices (2 computers, smartphone & PDA).
