Always looking for advice on making my business better, I ran across two interesting pieces of information. First is a free book (http://www.changethis.com/8.BootstrappersBible). Now this is my kind of business plan! Also, some interesting thoughts on business vs. engineering thought process (http://www.userscape.com/blog/index.php/site/10_tips_for_moving_from_programmer_to_entrepreneur/

Open Source for Windows CE & Windows Mobile |

I am amazed at the amount of open source software for the Windows CE & Windows Mobile! Of course, Windows CE itself is shared source and that may change depending on the recently announced submission of Microsoft’s licenses to the OSI. Here is what I have found over the past few years:
581 Source forge projects (http://sourceforge.net/softwaremap/trove_list.php?form_cat=222)
119 Search User samples on GotDotNet.com – Get ‘em quick before they disappear
(http://www.gotdotnet.com/Community/UserSamples/Default.aspx?ProductDropDownList=Windows%20CE.NET&SortDirection=Desc&SortColumnName=CreationDate)
Codeplex
Codeplex is fairly new from Microsoft to host Open Source apps. The site is still in development and it is hard to tell how many projects there really are but here are some:
http://www.codeplex.com/Project/ProjectDirectory.aspx?TagName=mobile
http://www.codeplex.com/Project/ProjectDirectory.aspx?TagName=Compact%20Framework

What would your list of top 5 Open Source project be? That is a hard problem! What if you could ask someone at Microsoft? Well in this interview (http://port25.technet.com/archive/2007/01/29/ossl-roundtable-answers-your-questions-part-1-of.aspx) with the Director of the Open Source Labs at Microsoft, they do list their top 5! Here are mine:

Ribbon Control in CAB |

I ran across a great article (http://savij.com/2007/07/31/using-cab-with-devcomponents-ribbon-control/) that shows how to integrate DevComponents UI Ribbon into a CAB (http://www.codeplex.com/smartclient/Wiki/View.aspx?title=Composite%20UI%20Application%20Block&referringTitle=Home) UI! We need to see more of this from the Patterns & Practices group. There are so many UI things it is hard to start sometimes.

I have been following Open Source at Microsoft for a while now. But today I found another web site (http://port25.technet.com/) that is all about Open Source @ MS. I subscribed to their blog and podcast. Amazing. Who knows what is next!

When I read Pragmatic Programmer (is that a oxymoron or what!) they said to learn a new language every year. I have been playing with Ruby and Monad. But now Erlang (http://pragdave.pragprog.com/pragdave/2007/07/programming-erl.html) seems to be the popular language for this year!

Both InfoSyncWorld (http://www.infosyncworld.com/news/n/8146.html) and MSN (http://tech.msn.com/products/Top10CellPhonePDAs.aspx) have the top 10 pda cell phones. Meanwhile Wired has the top 10 reasons to get rid of your cell phone (http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/2007/07/ten-reasons-to-.html).
