Log parser vs monad?
Right To Left By host on 2/25/2005
Log parser is a wonderful and long overdue tool from Microsoft. A new version was just released. Log parser essentially lets you run SQL queries again SQL, CSV, Registry, Event log, File System, Active Directory and various log files (like IIS). Unfortunately this is not really a Microsoft product. But there is a Microsoft product that I have mentioned before: Monad. This is basically a *nix type shell that wraps much of the same MS stuff: AD, File System, Event log, etc. My question is how much of overlap is there between these products. There are lots of people that love logparser and I hope that all of its functionality and more is in Monad.

Ruby
Right To Left By host on 2/24/2005
A while ago a co-worker (are you out there Tom? :) ) Showed me Ruby. I thought wow that is really cool for a scripting language. When I met Sam Ruby – the cool Web services guy from IBM - he gave a demo in python. I told him I thought of all people he should be using Ruby :). Well I thought I know perl and if I really need to do scripting I will use perl or vbscript. (I know this is going to generate hate mail I can just sense it!) But I put it in the back of my mind to learn and pay with some day. Then I ran into this: Ten Things a Java Programmer Should Know About Ruby and of course they all apply to C# as well. Meanwhile back at the ranch, one of my favorite authors (Dave Thomas from http://www.pragmaticprogrammer.com/) has written a book on Ruby: Programming Ruby. With so many languages popping up it is hard to know what is worth spending time on. But after reading one of the most original blog posts ever, I think it is settled, I am going to have to learn some Ruby.

Visual Studio Team Systems
Right To Left By host on 2/23/2005
Team Systems I recently learned the difference between Visual Studio Team Systems (VSTS) and Visual Studio Team Foundation Server (VSTF). I had thought these products were the same thing. VSTS is just a very souped up version of VS.Net. It has different flavors (which is a problem in my opinion – I will need to use all of these tools as a Consultant) and is just a conglomeration of tools such as a profiler, Unit test, MSBuild, Code coverage, FXCop, Prefast, App Verifier, etc. The coolest feature I have seen for IT Development is in the Architect Version. Microsoft’s version of UML (called SDM – System Definition Model) is very cool. This will eliminate the problems of deployment across domains and trying to get Forms Authentication working on an IIS box that doesn’t support it, etc. Of course Borland has announced it will create a version of UML 2.0 that will be an add-in to VSTS. VSTS will chip with VS.Net 2005 (which will probably be released shortly after the Sept. PDC.) VSTF is ver

Microsoft Improves Security?
Right To Left By host on 2/18/2005
With SP2 Microsoft added several things (including a Firewall) to improve windows security. I personally switched to firefox long ago to reduce spyware. Of course it is only a matter of time until firefox is popular enough. Of course /. Reports: Gartner Says it's a 2-Browser World. So, Experts predict Firefox spyware will show up this year. Microsoft hopefully will learn a lot from firefox for IE 7. Bill Gates announced on Tuesday at RSA that Microsoft is not only releasing IE 7 and AntiSpyware (which will have a free personal edition!) but will release an Anti-Virus product by the end of 2005. While this is great news and what the community was demanding from Microsoft I think MS will get flak back on this one. Here is why. What is this going to do to Norton and McAfee. Of course right now the AntiVirus might cost but what about 3 years from its release? When they make it part of the OS (like IE did to Netscape)! I am wondering about what will happen to Microsoft’s partners. Crystal must c

DotNetNuke (DDN) Findings
Right To Left By host on 2/11/2005
I was looking for a quick and easy way to set up a community site. Of course I wanted it to be .Net. Why? Because I was going to have to support it and if that involves code changes well I am much more proficient in ASP.Net than PHP! So I was looking for a Portal that would support a Forum and possibly a Blog. This turned out to be a big issue! I could of course have used Sharepoint. In hind site it might have been easier! But there are no open source or free solutions that I found for integrating a Forum or Blog. I also thought of using the ASP.Net Portal Starter Kit, but then I found Dot Net Nuke! I really liked the community around it and the modules that were already exiting solved a lot of my issues. I also liked how easy it is to administer and change the skin of the site. I then started a search for an ASP.Net Forum. The one used by www.asp.net and xbox looked great. This is how I found out that Rob Howard had left Microsoft. You can take a look at http://www.telligentsystems.com/S

New Cell Phone!
Right To Left By host on 2/9/2005
I just got a new cell phone! I am with Sprint (really only because the rest of the extended family is and I love the free Sprint to Sprint minutes). So I got a Sanyo 8100. Along with the DataPilot software I am very happy! Sam mentions it too here (http://www.intertwingly.net/blog/2005/02/03/Unlocking-Verizon-V265-phones ). The only down side is that the phone only allows string of 16 characters long and much of my calendar and contacts are longer than that. I really like how I can get my pictures off my phone directly to my laptop. Today I am happy with this. Maybe in the future I will get one of these MS Smart Phones: http://radio.weblogs.com/0001011/2004/10/25.html#a8495 http://www.urbanpotato.net/default.aspx/document/1990 http://blogs.ineta.org/btinkler/archive/2005/02/02/21760.aspx Then I can program it. Here is a free ebook: http://chrison.net/PermaLink,guid,56fd8d09-926b-4ee5-93b7-f1f00c791609.aspx
