Silverlight Requests
Right To Left By host on 9/18/2007
I do not know if I should be excited about Silverlight or not. I have been experimenting for a while on projects that are mobile, desktop (windows, linux and mac) and web. What about XBOX360 CF, MediaCenter and Gadgets? I could not agree more with Casey Chestnut (http://www.brains-n-brawn.com/default.aspx?blog=http://www.mperfect.net/blog/browse.aspx?bid=633247136743125000) and Chris Craft’s (http://www.cjcraft.com/blog/2007/09/13/WarningSilverlightEverywhereIsnt.aspx) posts. I talked to a Microsoft Evangelist (http://larryclarkin.com/) about this and he had some interesting information! No, I will not say what you will have to ask him. I agree with Casey why not iPhone support? What about Palm? In light of the collaboration between Nokia and Microsoft (http://www.nokia.com/search4/search.c?qt=microsoft&page=0&wsid=204&charset=UTF-8&sort=relevance&summ=true) including music and search, why not Symbian support? If redfive [http://www.redfivelabs.com] can do it why not MS? My big request though is to a

C# Software Transactional Memory
Right To Left By host on 9/13/2007
If you are like me I find multithreading programming hard! That is why I am watching this Microsoft Research project (http://research.microsoft.com/research/downloads/Details/6cfc842d-1c16-4739-afaf-edb35f544384/Details.aspx?CategoryID=). From the site: “Software Transactional Memory (STM) is an API for multithreaded computation in which shared data is synchronized without using locks. Threads synchronize by means of memory transactions, short-lived computations that either commit (take effect) or abort (have no effect). Transactions avoid the well-known problems of locking, including deadlock, priority inversion, and fault-intolerance. The SXM is a software transactional memory package written in C#. It is much easier to use than prior STMs because it uses Reflection.Emit to transparently add synchronization code to sequential data structures.”

No WIFI for you!
Right To Left By host on 9/13/2007
I can’t believe that these companies win a contract and then can not deliver. WIFI should not bee that hard. JSOnline (http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=655865) has a pretty good article on how these are failing. I think it is funny how municipalities have a negative mindset on this and are so receptive to cellular and WIMAX???

Open Source for Windows CE & Windows Mobile
Right To Left By host on 8/30/2007
I am amazed at the amount of open source software for the Windows CE & Windows Mobile! Of course, Windows CE itself is shared source and that may change depending on the recently announced submission of Microsoft’s licenses to the OSI. Here is what I have found over the past few years: 581 Source forge projects (http://sourceforge.net/softwaremap/trove_list.php?form_cat=222) 119 Search User samples on GotDotNet.com – Get ‘em quick before they disappear (http://www.gotdotnet.com/Community/UserSamples/Default.aspx?ProductDropDownList=Windows%20CE.NET&SortDirection=Desc&SortColumnName=CreationDate) Codeplex Codeplex is fairly new from Microsoft to host Open Source apps. The site is still in development and it is hard to tell how many projects there really are but here are some: http://www.codeplex.com/Project/ProjectDirectory.aspx?TagName=mobile http://www.codeplex.com/Project/ProjectDirectory.aspx?TagName=Compact%20Framework http://www.codeplex.com/Project/ProjectDirectory.aspx?TagName=smar

What would your list of top 5 Open Source project be? That is a hard problem! What if you could ask someone at Microsoft? Well in this interview (http://port25.technet.com/archive/2007/01/29/ossl-roundtable-answers-your-questions-part-1-of.aspx) with the Director of the Open Source Labs at Microsoft, they do list their top 5!
