I had been looking for a while for a Bluetooth GPS for my
Windows Mobile phone. I knew nothing
about GPS’s. But here where my
requirements based purely on spec:
- MTK 32
channel
- Long
battery life
- Bluetooth
- external
antennae.
- mini-usb
style charger
- Also
solar would be cool?
I really did my research, but unfortunately most of the
stuff is a little out of date:

I decided not to buy any mapping software but just use
either Google Maps or Windows Live. I
settled on Windows Live for some other functionality they include and it works
great. That is after I figure out how to
configure it (http://www.db75.com/new_blog/?p=235)
– this should be much easier! However, I
did learn that while tracking yourself on the maps (which are downloaded from
the internet) using EVDO, that I can not receive calls. CDMA will have to fix this!
The reason I got a GPS is that I wanted to try a couple of
cool .Net apps. First, I thought I would
create a compass application. Well of
course someone already has done that (http://www.db75.com/bluegps/)
and it looks like he is working on cool stuff! - http://www.db75.com/new_blog/ The disappointment that I should have forseen
is that this compass only works when you are moving. Oh well.
I also wanted to create an application that simply logged a GPS location
periodically and try to mash it up with Google Maps. Still working on that one. Finally I thought that I could use the GPS
data to sync up with times on my photos and add location information to my
pictures (http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/digital-cameras/sony-gpscs1-tags-photos-with-location-191454.php). And eventually be able to trigger on a photo
on the phone and grab the gps location.
There are many more applications (like GeoCaching) that I am
still learning about. Much more to do
with GPS that I ever thought. One of the
most interesting though has to be http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/
which alarms (should SMS?) when nearing speed trap camera!
