Your Finances in Changing Times
Larry Burkett
Though this book was written in the
'70s and revised in the '80s it is almost prophetic in the way it
predicted the problems we are experiencing in the economy today. I
have read this book many times, it is a short and interesting read.
In Chapter 1, How Economics Began,
there is a simple illustration of money. He reminded me of the basic
definition of money (pg 21):
It must have value
It must be storable
It must be divisible
This makes me sad that our government
is playing so dangerously with economic perceptions of stability.
But God is in control! Our nation has become a giant ship that is
almost impossible to turn on such little rudders. Rather like the
Titanic.
In Chapter 4, What is Wealth, the
author brings up many good points, but the one that stuck me this
time that I didn't notice before was that God can actually use the
lack of money to direct and help a Christian's life. I think I have
been effected by the thinking that if God is in it, then it will be
blessed with prosperity and money. But there is more ways to be
blessed than just monetarily.
In Chapter 5, What is Financial
Bondage, he lists a number of problems that I think most people have
experienced at least one or more at some level in their life.
Chapter 6, Financial Freedom, shows how
to God wants us to be free from this potential bondage.
Chapter 9
How much is enough?
I have often wondered how much to
responsibly Save before giving money away
Chapter 10
On pg 96 the author clarifies that it
depends on attitude. Also God wants to use his money today!
Pg 107 Christains who bypass God's work
because they refuse even a slight discomfort have missed the mark.
Chapter 11
pg113 says that there are about 10
times the verses saying that we Should give tel unbelievers as
believers.
Chapter 13
Pg 125 Avoid lending to someone in need
when giving is possible
